Sarah Rose McDonald is the 2016 RFDTV The American Barrel Racing Champion. McDonald held off 2015 WPRA Reserve Champion Barrel Racer Lisa Lockhart and denied Lockhart and Louie the possible three-peat championship.
Current WPRA World Champion Callie DuPerier and Dash Ta Diamonds “Arson” started the short go off with the fastest time of the night posting a 14.312, but the champions caught the backside of the second barrel to pick up the plus five for the down barrel.
McDonald ran second in the run order and put up the winning time of 14.470 being clocked at a blistering 30MPH. WPRA Rookie Jackie Ganter and Cartels Fame couldn’t move to the leader board with their time of 14.851, Two time RFDTV The American Champion Lisa Lockhart held her fate in her hands. Lockhart and Louie brought the crowds to their feet and raised the roof as they rounded the barrels, but the three-peat dream came up short by a mere 2/10ths of a seconds with a 14.648.
McDonald was awarded a $100,000, a Polaris Ranger and prizes for their championship at this years “The American”. McDonald was speechless when first approached about her championship run.
“My horse is a Streak of Fling, and my uncle trained her. He’s here today and I’m glad he is here today. She is a blessing and I am blessed to have her. I was riding for one of our tough southeast girls today that passed away, Lara Dewess. I think she was with us today. (Dewess passed away earlier this morning from a brain injury suffered in a riding accident that occurred at a pro rodeo earlier this weekend)” said the newly crowned champion. “My horse won this for me and I’m definitely going to take care of her”.
